Chapter 12

Chapter 12 in The Bedford Researcher is about developing your argument. The first point it makes about developing your argument is how to support  your thesis. Step one is to choose reasons that support your thesis statement. Step two select evidence to support your reasons, so for every reason you offer to support your thesis back it up with evidence. Step three decide how to appeal to your readers, which is basically asking them to consider what you have to say.

*You can appeal to your readers through authority, emotion, principles, values, beliefs, character, and logic.

The second point made in the book is assessing the integrity of your argument. Check for fallacies based on distraction like red herring ( an irrelevant & distracting point), ad hominem attacks ( attempts to discredit an idea or argument but saying it cannot be trusted), and irrelevant history ( another form of distraction). Also look for fallacies based on questionable assumptions; sweeping generalizations, straw-man attacks, citing inappropriate authorities, and jumping on a bandwagon. Fallacies based on misrepresentation, and fallacies based on careless reasoning.

Chapter 11: Developing Your Thesis Statement

Chapter 11 is about developing your thesis statement, a crucial part of any paper. The first point made in chapter 11 is about using your resources and position statement by:
-Reviewing your position statement: deciding what to convey to your readers
-Review your notes: identify important info, ideas, and arguments; consider whether your info, ideas, and arguments are helpful; review and elaborate.
-Consider your purpose and role: deepen your understanding of your issue, how have your purposes effected you and what is your role as a writer now?
-Reflect on your readers: what will help you address your reader's particular needs?

The second point made in chapter 11 is drafting your thesis statement by considering what your learned through the reflection on your position, notes, and writing situation. Again you have to identify important info, ideas and arguments. Draft alternatives, an affective thesis invites your readers to learn something new, suggest that they change their attitudes or beliefs,or argue that they should take action of some kind. Basically your thesis should stick to your readers encouraging them to think about your topic. Consider the type pf document you plan to write, and focus your thesis statement.

Chapter 8: Searching for Information with Digital Resources

In chapter eight if the Bedford Reader is about info you can get by searching online databases. The first point in searching digital resources is to review your research plan and your proposal and look for key works and phrases that you can search that will help you get info about your topic. Advanced searches can be more helpful because you can clarify what you want your search to include by clicking AND then typing in another keyword or phrase. You can also click OR, NOT,  ADJ, NEAR, , BEFORE, etc. After finding sources you need to make sure that they will help you improve your paper by addressing the issues and elements you intend on addressing.

The second point the Bedford Reader makes in chapter eight is about searching for sources with online library catalogs. You can do this by searching by a keyword or phrase and you with library catalogs you can pick if you want your search in all or only certain parts of a catalog record. Search by author if you know who you want to get the information from. Search by title, subject heading, or with multiple strategies ( which is much like the advanced search).

The third point made in chapter eight is searching for sources with databases. Identify relevant databases by asking yourself these questions :
•Am I focusing on an issue that is likely to have been addressed in recent news coverage?
•Am I focusing on an issue that is related to a broad area of interest, such as business, education, or government?
•Am I focusing on an issue that is related to a particular profession or academic discipline?
• Have I already identified sources about my issue?
•Is the full text of the source available?
•Am I searching for no textual materials?
If you are searching news and information databases the focus on recently published articles in newspapers. If you are searching subject databases they will give you info and summaries on sources about broad subject areas like education, business, or government. Searching bibliographies will give you info on publications in a specific profession like literary studies, computational linguistics, or social sciences. Searching citation indexes gives info about publication info an summaries on sources that have referenced a specific publication. Media databases will give you access to images, videos, and audio sources. Often with historical and contemporary photographs, images of art, television and movies, and audio recordings.

The fourth point made on chapter eight is searching for sources with web search sites. Do this by identifying relevant web search sites like Ask, Bing, Google, and Yahoo. When on these sites you an search by using :
•Web search engines
•Web directories
•Deep web search sites and directories
•Meta search sites
•News search sites
•Reference search sites
•Government documents search sites and directories
•E-book sites
•Blog search sites
•Discussion search sites
•Social network search
•Alternative search site

The fifth point made in chapter eight is  searching for sources with media search sites like Ask, Bing, Google, and Yahoo. You can user media search sites by using image and directories searches, audio search sites and directories, and video search sites,
